Is Fear of Rejection Slips Keeping You From Writing Your Book?
Tip: self- publishing can open the envelop to success
Fred: I remember when book publishers decided who was worthy enough to have the honor of being an author.
Lyna: And many of those who did finally get published still had to open reply envelopes containing the dreaded rejection slip that made them feel they were not good enough.
Fred: Many times rejections are due to bad timing, material incompatible to the publisher, or the fact that the writer's guidelines were not met when submitting the material.
Lyna: But along with everything else, the publishing business has changed. Although there are advantages to working with a publisher, it is possible both to publish your own book and to promote it yourself.
Fred: And now you can you make more profits than if you collected royalties! Other advantages to self publishing include control over the layout and design, how many are printed at a time, and total control over promoting and marketing your book.
Lyna: A big publisher asked me to write a book in my field of art. They have a big distribution; however, my book was a bit different from the other books they publish and they didn’t even try to market it to the big chains that would have sold a lot of copies. Even more frustrating is that they wouldn’t even let me help sell the books by giving me a bulk price with which to approach those store chains. If I had self-published, I could have sold a lot more books and obtained more exposure.
Fred: Afraid you won’t have success promoting your own book? Look at the one titled: What Every Man Knows about Women. Cindy Cashman was creative with promoting this book. She published herself and became a rich lady—and the book's pages were completely blank! She realized this was a novelty item and concentrated on selling it to women’s boutiques.
Lyna: If she can do it, it can be done again. Why not by you?
