Does Finding The Right Coach Take Too Much Time?

Tip: The time spent finding the perfect coach will be offset by the time he/she saves you in helping you grow your business

Dear Fred and Lyna;

I have been searching the internet and see there are numerous people out there that offer coaching services. I run my own consulting business and would love help with growing it as well as improving my own quality of life. How does one go about choosing the right coach?

Fred:  This is a great question and we were in this same situation about a year ago when we were looking for a coach to help grow our business as well. You first need to define what you are looking for.

Lyna: The best way to do this is to sit down and write your strengths and weaknesses. If you have trouble with this exercise you may want to ask your spouse, friends and business associates.

Fred: Next you have to determine what you need. Are you looking for advice in marketing, accounting sales, etc.?

Lyna: Don’t forget your personal goals as well. Perhaps you are looking for someone who can motivate you.

Fred:  The next step will be to look for coaches that fit your business and needs. For example, you may want to find a coach who specializes in the line of work that you consult in.

Lyna: And if you have trouble finding one, search for coaches that have similar interests, etc.

Fred: Once you have narrowed your choices, you’ll want to interview them and get a feel of their energy.

Lyna: I remember when we were looking for a coach we had trouble getting hold of several of them. They wouldn’t return phone calls, etc.

Fred: I would write down a list of specific questions. For example:

How long have you been coaching
Who are some of your clients and will you let me talk with them?
How does your program work and how often will you talk with me?

Lyna: Go with your gut. Make sure you feel comfortable and they have answered all your questions.

Fred: Remember a coach is there to guide you. He or she and should not tell you what to do, but rather suggest options.

Lyna: Also find out if they will offer you assignments or exercises and how they plan to follow up on them.

Fred: Make sure your coach is original and is not just quoting from a manual.

Lyna: It’s a good idea to ask them for a trial period to see if things will work out. You don’t want to  commit to them for a year or more without knowing if this coach is right for you.

Fred: Finding the perfect coach can take time—but this will be offset by the time he/she saves you in helping you grow your business.

The Publicity HoundI've been following Joan Stewart, The Publicity Hound®, for years and have bought several of her products. As a result, I doubled the number of publicity hits I was getting in just eight months, and I even got stories in the Los Angeles Times and on National Public Radio.
